Asian American Perspectives of the American Dream

In "The Joy component part Club," as four Chinese mah jong partners lament the American shipway of their little girls, we discover why their control of their daughters might be so rigid from their profess experiences in china, where women were devalued and often the victims of abuse. In The Warrior Woman, children are taken from their mothers, women are devalued and abused, and one of the mah jong players discard her twins because she felt they would be cursed if she did not. As their daughters go bad into Americanized houses and marry American (i.e. snow-covered) men, the women fear disconnect with their Chinese hereditary pattern. When June is jr. her mother can control her, "Only two kinds of daughter: obedient or follow-own-mind. Only one kind of daughter could live in this house: obedient kind" (Wang 1993). When she is elder June realizes these constraints stem from her mother's past and older ways of life in China.

Ultimately though, these restraints make June determined to be herself and to follow her own mind but not without losing sight of her cultural heritage and lineage. Waverly's experiences are similar but she does not let them transport her back. When her fianc? asks if she told her mother about their wedding she tells him no because her mother would " alternatively get rectal cancer" than discover she is marrying a white man (Wang 1993). condescension the fact that Asian Americans typically fare better in socioeconomic terms and measures (education, income, etc.) than other minorities in American culture, they mum seem to lag behind in positions of power and leading in American culture. We have an African American president, a lesbian Latina on the Supreme Court and Hispanic governors. However, Asian Americans seem to lag behind other minorities in this feel of the American Dream. Perhaps it is because Chinese culture is so several(a) from American culture that Asians are still viewed as someway less American than other minority groups. Perhaps it is because the restraints on modern generations of Asian Americans have limited their ambition or achievement. Despite these potential reasons, Asian Americans continue to become a more dominant presence in U.S. society as they struggle to achieve their own slice of the American Dream.
