The Play Ghost
The play Ghost is about Alving family. From appearance, the family seems normal, but in reality is preoccupied by bizarre behavior, dark secrets, and syphilis disease. Captain and Mrs. Alving are parents to their only son Oswald Alving. Oswald spends his childhood away from home as desired by his pose in order to thrash the moral decay of his father who died of syphilis. Upon maturity, he comes back and is preparedness to marry Regina who happens to be his half sister. In the climax of the play, Oswald surprises his mother by relieving his syphilis status after visiting his doctor. Oswald is scared of developing dementia to a point of requesting his mother to figure euthanasia on him. He begs her to administer an overdose of morphia on him as a sign of love.
In my opinion, Mrs. Alving did non administer an overdose of morphine on her son. She vows to be by his side for as long as Oswald lived.
She is ready to be part of the syphilis ghost that has come back to haunt her family is almost taking her sons life. Assisting her son in suicide would not prove love as it lead remain to be another ghost of sin to haunt. As Osvalds fear of change state mentally unstable and becoming like a helpless child, she confidently says, My child lead have his mother to look after him (Ibsen 98). However, Osvald compassionately disown this statement with violence as he tend to infer that his mother is only interested in protecting her self-importance and remain the mother to that sweet little boy who was direct from home.
