Jeans Rhys, originally named as Ella Gwendolen Rees Williams was born on 24 August 1890 in Roseau, Dominica. Rhys was of creole heritage. Her father, William Rees William was a British composition and her mother, Minna nee Lockhart was a white native of Dominica. Rhys grew up felling wholly and alienated in the Caribbean in 1907 at the age of xvi she move to Cambridge, England where she attended Perse School; however after the ending of her father she was force the quit to school and discontinued her studies. In 1909 she became a chorus girl. She had various jobs which included mannequin and an operatives model, after she became a volunteer during the world war. As her life progressed she met Jean Lenglet, who was a con man, they got married and moved to Paris. The couple had two children, one daughter and a boy who died three week after birth. A few later, Lenglet was judgment of conviction to prison. In 1922 she met hybridizing Madox Ford. They hey had an affair and hit it off Ford was the one who encouraged Jean to start writing.
