The Athlete of the Year awards for 2005 went to Jeff Pollock, a snowboarder, and Tamara Foronda, a volleyball player (Athletes, 2006). Pollock is an special athlete and won the silver medal at the 1999 Winter Deaflympics, and a tan in the Giant Slalom 4 years later. Pollock is a member of the USA Snowboard Association. Foronda was elective USADSF Sportswoman of the Year.

She was Volleyball Player of the Year in the crown Athletics Conference at Gallaudet University and won a bronze medal with teammate Sarah Parker in women's beach volleyball at the 2005 Deaflympics. She was awarded the WIDEX Athlete of the 2005 Deaflympics for Fair Play and Sportsmanship. Foronda plans to graduate in the chute of 2006 with a major in Deaf Education. Daryl Thomas, a stops special education teacher was selected to play on the USA basketball team in the 2005 Summer Deaflympics (Meyer, 2004). Thomas teaches selection school inside the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center, a challenge in itself. Thomas was born with a hearing loss, and lost more of his hearing in college.
