In advertising, subliminal messages argon often used to appeal to the sensibilities of a target audience. No one is better at employing such techniques than American tobacco plant companies. The images portrayed in many of “big tobacco’s” ads inspire a variety of senses and emotions. One common tactical manoeuvre used by Camel cigarettes (a subsidiary of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.) is to isolate and further life’s pleasures, in order to appeal to the loyal and rebellious nature of the sheer independent American.
A special Camel ad found in Elle, a common, upscale women’s magazine is a perfect example of subliminal advertising. “Pleasure To Burn” is the slogan centered upon the advertisement’s page. above the slogan, “CAMEL” is written in their recognizable trademark font. A charming orange sunset is the backdrop to the scene of an attractive, young, woman relaxing and enjoying a cigarette on the back of a classic car. The picture is painted in the style of the early ‘50s “ narrow down doll” image. Smoke creeps up lazily by means of the lettering from the cigarette positioned directly beneath the word “Burn”.
The woman relaxes, eyes closed, facing up towards the orange sunset. in that location is no question that she is enjoying her cigarette, and her surroundings. She is dressed in a buffet car waitress uniform, complete with hat, apron, and “JANE” stenciled on her left pocket. Rather than imagining the stereotyped images of young women on roller-skates rushing around busy armed service patrons, the subject of this ad is very much relaxed and alone. Not overtly sexual; her short and tight uniform conveys a healthy sensuality. She reclines, comfortable, confident, and independent.
